Teachers, hospital union lose at high court

Vancouver - The B.C. Supreme Court has ruled that political strikes aren't protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The ruling comes in a case involving the B.C. Teachers Federation and the Hospital Employees Union over illegal walkouts in 2002 and 2003. The unions argued the definition of a strike in B.C. law violated the Charter, and sought a judicial review of a B.C. Labour Relations Board decision that the definition is not unconstitutional.
