Bay Area Teamsters play rope-a-dope with WM

As the East Bay garbage workers lockout entered its 10th day, David Tucker, a spokesman for Waste Management, said his company would love to comply but pointed fingers at the Teamsters. "They came in (to Monday's talks) and said they weren't going to negotiate," Tucker said. "Their position was - no talks. We getting pressure - yes - from all the elected officials and we respect what they are asking us to do ... We would like for the union leadership to meet with us."

However, Teamsters spokesman Chuck Mack fired back. "We are ready to settle," he said. "They (Waste Management) know what it will take to settle. They're refusing to settle. They have a set of demands they want impose on the workers and the workers want nothing to so with them."

At a morning rally, San Leandro Mayor Tony Santos demanded that Waste Management Inc. ends its lock out. "Waste Management it is time to end this lock out and get back to the negotiation table," he told the cheering crowd of strikers and their supporters.
