UFCW taps picket captains for grocery strike

Federal mediators say contract talks between three major supermarket operators and the UFCW union representing their Southern California workers have been suspended until next week. While talks continue, the union says it has begun making preparations in the event there is a strike or a lockout. The union plans to hold a meeting with its membership on Thursday to go over the effort, which includes recruiting picket captains, stockpiling food and assembling picket signs.

The US Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service says both sides had been engaged in discussions for a 7-day stretch prior to taking a recess from negotiations. Negotiations between the UFCW and the supermarket chains - Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons - have been taking place since January.
